Well, it’s come time to update again.
To make a long story short — one of the two computers in the Small Barn is completely down and the other is dying fast.
I’m still running old PCI 16x converters and the UAD-1 card (or would be if that machine worked) and that causes some issues… PCI slots are hard to come by and run the cost of a new machine up a bit, but I found a work-around. There’s a dandy piece of kit that will allow me to use those cards in a PCIe slot while I save for a Universal Audio Apollo Twin USB to run my UA plugins and handle the audio conversion while adding two pristine mic preamps.
The big question is “How am I going to afford this?”
Being resourceful and following some tips I found on Indie Musicprenuer, I did some research with my friends and found out that many of them would be willing to help with a crowd funding campaign! So it looks like some fund-raising is in order. That’s a whole other project, but the Streetsign is up for the challenge!
So, here’s the plan
I’m currently researching crowd funding options and have narrowed the choice of funding sites to two. I’m leaning toward using GoFundMe.com and of course supporters can always click on the Donate tab or the Donate button seen on most pages of this site (that’s a hint or “call to action” as some would say).
As funds acrue, I’ll first buy some parts for the laptop, which has been a champ of a machine. That will allow me to handle Middle Tennessee Music and most of the necessary charity and music tasks.
Next, I’ll repair or replace the desktop – possibly both since the wife and kids could use this one. I may actually use a second desktop.
Finally, I’ll add the UA Apollo and a second video monitor to tie it all together.
Repairs of the laptop with an upgrade to 8 gb of ram should run around $80 – Great News!
Repair of the desktop is about 80 as well – to put it in perspective, I can buy the same machine refurbished from Dell for $70 (yes, it’s that old).
Replacement of the desktop will be $500 – $700 for a modern machine capable of handling current audio / video production. Not too bad. This is assuming a current i5 or i7 processor, or AMD equivalent and 8-16 gb ram. Mac is out of the question, Windows 7 or 10 pro it is …
Universal Audio Apollo interface runs 600 used for the older model and around a grand for the new one.
Total funds to raise come in around two thousand.
Dell Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 gb DDR2, UAD-1 pci, M-audio 1010 converter (completely obsolete)
Toshiba Satellite 775d Athlon A6 quad, 4 gb DDR3 (great computer once repaired)
Let me know if you want to help!
I’ll keep you posted on how things are going and all the other developments at Small Barn Sound. If you want to help out with a campaign in any way at all, Leave a comment, send an email, tell me on social media… you can do it ;)
